Running

There are many things I miss about being able-bodied, and one of the big ones is being able to be active. Working out or going for a hike or a run has always been one of the best coping skills and stress reliefs for me, and I struggle with not having a comparable activity now that I’m not able to do those things.

Though I usually ran just for fun, I had set a goal for myself once of running a race someday. I figured even if I did just a 5k one day, I could knock it off my list and enjoy the experience. Well I sat on that goal for too long, and it never came to be.

Fast forward to today… I came the closest I will to meeting that goal! My friend and fire partner, Michael, who has a lot of miles under his running shoes, teamed up with me to do a 5k together. We chose a virtual 5k that fit our friendship perfectly, mapped out a course, and he pounded the pavement while pushing me in my wheelchair. It was glorious! When I closed my eyes and listened to the rhythm of his feet against the ground, with the fresh air tossing back my hair, it almost felt like I was running.

I know it wasn’t easy; he had to navigate getting my wheels across places with no pavement, bump me up and down a few curbs, and push me up some ginormous hills.

He never complained, and just chugged along like a freight train. It was such a special day of fun and friendship, and I’m so thankful for Michael going above and beyond to help me accomplish something in the best way I could.

Gratitude

Gratitude

My heart is struggling with gratitude. It’s a beautiful season, and all around I see my people running races and taking hikes to see beautiful trees, and I have grumbled to not be able to do those things now. I had a procedure yesterday that was difficult for me, and stirred a lot of fear and unease. I can feel it tempting to swallow me. This is when I know I need to fight hard for a grateful heart.

Knowing this season has pulled hard at my mental health, I started keeping a gratitude journal. Not only does it force me to think about the best parts of my day, but it leaves a road map for me to look back on and remember all the big and small graces that have sprinkled my days. I gifted myself a Sprockett 😂, and I’m using it to create a daily reminder of all the things I have to be thankful for.

Four Favorites

It’s a drizzly morning, and I’m headed to the hospital soon for the third attempt at making my feeding tube right. What a stereotypical Monday! I could use a little pick me up, thought maybe you could too. Because the thing is, past the soggy shoes, and gray skies and cold, sterile rooms, there are amazing bits of joy all around us. Let me share a few with you.

Run, don’t walk to Trader Joe’s for some cookie butter! You. Guys. I don’t know how they came up with this, but it is truly Heaven in a jar. I made my kids two sandwiches, and the entire rest of this jar got eaten by me. With a spoon. It’s that good. We put it on pancakes, ice cream, graham crackers, sandwiches… pretty much wherever your imagination takes you, it’s delicious. It’s like Christmas before Christmas. The crunchy version is even better; somehow they’ve gotten little bits of those amazing cookies to stay crisp and crunchy throughout the butter, and it’s simply divine.

Young Living’s rose ointment. This stuff is good for so many things! It’s wonderful on cuticles, dry hands, rough patches of skin, as well as to smooth on your lips when you’re caught without your favorite lippy. I personally use a little on the delicate skin under my eyes, which makes them look and feel brighter, and rub a little into my eyelashes to help them stay soft and not dry and brittle. It’s small enough to throw in your bag and take everywhere with you, and a little goes such a long way, a jar will last you forever! Find your favorite friend who does Young Living oils (ahem, myself included), and ask them how you can get some!

Cotton Candy Grapes. I have no idea what miracle went into making these taste the way they do, but it is epic. You know when you’re really craving dessert, but you try to be adult and choose something healthier? This is a win! Not only are they perfectly sweet and juicy for a grape, but they literally taste like cotton candy. It will take you right back to that baseball game when you were a 5 year old licking the sticky blue whisps from between your fingers. Sweet craving satisfied! Trader Joe’s has them, and Walmart and Kroger/King Soopers do at times as well.

These stamps. All the heart eyes! Yes, I am the lady holding up the line at the post office because I want to see allll the stamp designs before I choose which ones to buy. These ones do not disappoint on the cuteness factor! I bought an extra book of them because I was so in love and wanted them to last a long time. I seriously want to send mail to all the people just so I can use them, and on the same hand don’t want to use a single one because I find them so adorable and I love looking at them. I don’t know how long they’ll be available, so hop to it and get some of the cuteness before it goes away!

Oh, and let’s circle back to the cookie butter again…according to my fire partner it also works amazingly ON TOP of TJ’s dark chocolate peanut butter cups, in case you needed another reason. Now run!

Mixed Media Self Portraits

When Mark travels for work we don’t do much. That can be tough for the kids, but without him here to drive us and to push me around long distances in my wheelchair, we just aren’t really capable of getting out. I try to plan special things for when he’s away that break up the time and give the kids something to look forward to. We almost always order pizza with all the topping he won’t eat (hello olives and peppers!), we rent movies, and come up with activities we can do while we are huddled in. Today I’m sharing with you a fun idea we copied from another family, and had so much fun doing it.

First I took a picture of each kid (and dog) against a white wall in our house. Then I printed them out in black and white, set out our crafting buckets, and let the kids get to work. The rules were there were no rules. They took scraps and stickers and colors and every creative thing they could rummage, and transformed their pictures into works of art. I did some with them, and we truly had the best time giggling and getting our creative juices flowing. The pictures are proudly displayed on our kitchen wall, until the next thing we come up with!

Four Faves

I’m away from home in a strange bed tonight, and I thought I would do something a little different on my blog to pass the time. As I grabbed a few “necessities” and threw them in my bag on the way out, I thought about how some of the best things are discovered from other people’s suggestions, so I’m going to share with you a few of my favorite things!

5 gum in Strawberry Flood. It’s no secret that the peppermint 5 gum is my absolute favorite, but not too long ago I tried the strawberry on a whim when I came across it. Just like the mint, it keeps its flavor long after most gums fade. The strawberry is a perfect blend of tart and not-too-sweet. It’s juicy and fruity and just the best pick me up on a hot day of running around.

Double stuff is my jam, but an Oreo completely encased in fudge? That is perfection! These tiny bites have the perfect ratio of cookie to chocolate, and they come in pre-measured portions so you don’t go overboard! They also come in flavors like mint and coconut if you’re looking to switch things up.

BiC Gelocity pens. Not only do these come in a bunch of vibrant, fun, as well as practical colors, but they glide so smoothly you’ll never want to stop writing! I use these for jotting down notes and writing letters, as well as doodling or drawing in my journal and sketch pads. The creamy inks are a pleasure to work with! I keep a variety of pens tossed in my bag for when opportunities arise.

Ecolips lip balm from Whole Foods. This organic lippy is divine, and I find myself reaching for it time and again. It moisturizes exceptionally well, and never feels thick or sticky. Yumberry is my favorite flavor, but they have many delicious flavors to choose from, like vanilla honey, blood orange, and pomegranate.

Black paper sketch pad. I got some great new markers and pens for my birthday, and I picked up this sketchbook at Michaels to practice with them. Not only are the pages super smooth and thick enough to prevent bleeding through, but I absolutely love how it makes the colors pop!

Summer Lovin’

Every summer for the past few years we have started off the break making a “summer bucket list” of things we want to do during summer vacation. Some things are big, some are small, but the main idea is to be intentional about using our time. I am a homebody through and through, so I would be perfectly happy snuggled in my nesting place with my tribe. I have wanderers and adventurers though, so we try to plan some exciting things to venture out and try while we are free from school routines.

This summer we crammed in more than we usually do, trying to check off some unique things that I either haven’t done or likely won’t able to in the future. It has been a blast. I have dug deep for energy and stamina to hang with my people, and while the nights find me collapsed in an exhausted heap, it has been exhilarating to taste so many joys this summer. We stretch me out, hydrate, medicate, and wake up again to take on the next adventure.

From staying in pajamas all day and doing sidewalk chalk, to concert hopping and driving to new destinations, we are creating a beautiful bucket full of the exciting and the mundane of sweet summertime. What is on your bucket list this summer?

Home, the Place Where I Belong…

My tribe and I are elated to be spending some time in our old stomping grounds, Colorado Springs. Mark had to travel out here for work, so we made him drag us along! There is so much good to be found in the bright sunny skies and horizon full of majestic, towering peaks. This is our place.

We have seen so many friends this visit. So many. There are still more we couldn’t even squeeze into our days, but we have dearly enjoyed each heart we’ve been able to reconnect with during our time out here. Old friends are the bestest friends.

My little people have enjoyed days full of swimming, playing with friends, visiting their favorite spots, and then snuggling in for crafts, movies, and massage trains. It has been a wonderful break for our hearts and minds, and we have found joy in our minutes.

Our visit is too short to fit in all the goodness we left behind here, but our love tanks are full as we wrap up a wonderful week packed with sweet memories. Thankful for the Giver of such gifts.

Growing Hope

As I struggle with losing my ability to do so many of my favorite pastimes, there are a few I’m holding tight to. Gardening is one of them. A sweet friend offered to get the seedlings I had been nursing into the ground for me, but I held tight to believing I could do it myself. I so much wanted to feel the warm earth as I babied my sprouts and seeds into the ground. I do not by any means have a green thumb, but have managed for a stretch of years to grow a number of vegetables for my family right in our backyard. I’m missing the Colorado sunshine, but trying to figure out what works here.

I don’t know what it is, but watching things grow has always felt so sacred to me. It truly is a miracle to see tiny dried out seeds change and grow into something beautiful. It brings me such joy. The warm soil, gentle sun, and fresh colors of green make me feel as if I’m in a breathtaking cathedral.

Too weak to stand, I carved out my own small slice of land and sat in the dirt, covered in afternoon sun, and gently pressed seeds and seedlings into the earth. Watching them sprout and grow bigger is bringing me so much delight and satisfaction. Here’s hoping for a harvest, but either way, the working of the soil has been therapeutic for me in beautiful ways.

For the Love of Hospice

For the better part of a year or more my weeks have had to revolve around appointments. With 14 separate specialists each handling a different aspect of my health, you can imagine how the calendar filled up.  Most of these doctors have done me well, and helped me cope with the different challenges of  having a degenerative neuromuscular disease, but the past several months have left me exhausted each time I’ve had to leave my home, and resenting the several times a week that I had to spend my daily energy on seeing a doctor.  Helpful, yes, but the truth is there is no cure, and they’re all just doing their best to help me be more comfortable and handle the unpleasant side effects of my condition.

My husband and I had a very honest conversation about all this, and agreed it was time to get hospice involved.  Instead of running all the time from doctor to doctor, I wanted to spend more time at home with my loves spending what energy I do have on them.  I needed all the doctors consolidated into one master plan. It was the /best/ decision. 

The palliative care people? They’re a different breed.  I remembered this from my days working on the ambulance, but it was reaffirmed to me the first time I met my new team.  They aren’t out to find me a cure; their goal is to keep me as comfortable as I can be with what I’ve got, and that is exactly what I needed.  I was met with such kindness.  They weren’t rushed and bothered like so many; they took the time to see and understand me. They acknowledged and affirmed everything I was going through and feeling, and they committed to only do what I needed most.

Our days have slowed down.  I have found myself with more energy because there is less running around.  I’m so deeply grateful to shift our goals and focus on loving each other even more. My doctor is so kind, and readily available when I need something.  When I landed in the hospital with septic pneumonia recently, my palliative care team was there, and they were the ones who stayed extra in my room and laid comforting hands on me while we spoke, asked me how I was feeling, and truly sympathized with the pain I was experiencing and wanted to help.  I am learning a whole new level of compassion from these people, and I can’t help but wonder if I show the same love when someone needs me.  I sure aim to, and I’m thankful to have such incredible examples showing me the way.
